Château de Fontainebleau Day Trip Itinerary & Outdoor Activities

A visit to Château de Fontainebleau unfolds best when approached as a full day of gentle rhythm rather than a rushed excursion. This historic estate invites lingering through gardens once walked by monarchs, forest paths scented with pine, and quiet moments between train rides and terrace lunches. With thoughtful planning, Fontainebleau becomes a graceful extension of Paris itself. What follows is a sovereign itinerary designed for ease, beauty, and literary wandering.

Transport Guide

  • Metro

    Gare de Lyon
Begin at Gare de Lyon, navigating there from your Paris flat or hotel.

  • GARE LYON

    Direction: Montargis Sens or Montereau

Find the ticket office, if you are unfamiliar with the train system. They will help you purchase the ticket & tell you how to get to the platform.

  • GARE FONTAINEBLEAU

    Fontainebleau-Avon

Once on the train, you will want to pay attention to the announcements and get off at the stop Fontainebleau-Avon.

  • BUS

    Line 1

The bus stops are located in front of the train station. Look for line 1, which will take you directly to the chateau. Bring cash for the toll!

  • RETURN

    Everything in Reverse

The nice thing about taking the trip out is that you just do everything above but in reverse!

DON'T FORGET THESE ITEMS

Use this checklist and the notes space here so you do not forget these important items for your special day trip!

  • EXTERNAL BATTERY & cable

Using map applications and the camera on your phone will drain it quickly. Bring your external battery AND the cable.

  • PAIN RELIEVE & BAND-AIDS

You'll be doing a lot of walking today! In the case you end up with a blister or are feeling a bit sore, have these two remedies with you.

  • UMBRELLA OR JACKET

The weather can change quickly here! And the castle can be a bit chilly on the inside. Stay dry & comfortable!

  • CASH FOR THE BUS

You'll want to have coins or bills to pay the bus driver as you board. TIP: I also like to purchase my return train ticket when I arrive, to avoid the day-end queues.

  • PATIENCE

It's okay to get a bit lost, make a mistake, or ask for help. Don't forget that everyone working at the train station, bus stop, and chateau are there to help and serve you!
