LAURE
I started to be interested in tableware and decoration at a very young age. After my studies at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, I took a course to learn to paint on porcelain, a skill that I have since developed on glass. At first I was only producing for my own use or for my loved ones, and I only started using Instagram to give away my designs. As my Instagram account grew, I received more and more messages from followers asking me where they could buy my designs... that's what convinced me to create my little business.
I was lucky enough to learn porcelain painting in a Parisian workshop from a lovely and very talented teacher. As time went by, I refined my technique and my universe, which I developed little by little on glass: I like flowers and birds, everything that is delicate and bucolic.
I make painted decorations on glass or porcelain, with the aim of embellishing the table and thus the daily life. All the patterns I paint are original, created by me and made entirely by hand. I don't really work by collection, preferring to imagine new models all year long.
But the guiding thread of my production is the inspiration that comes from my garden, from the flowers, from the little birds that I see singing from my studio window, and even from some insects!
When I started painting on glass, I think I was one of the only ones doing it... now there is a real craze! Beyond my recognizable universe, what distinguishes me is that my glasses are painted with real pigments and then fired in a professional oven overnight: they are much more durable than those of the "competition", and it is something important for me to offer something that will last over time.
The Process
How do you obtain the materials? What materials do you use?
I look for the best supports: the porcelain usually comes from Limoges, and the glass often from Italy or Spain. For painting, I use pigments that I dilute with medium, as well as "liquid" gold.
How long does it take to make your products?
It is quite variable depending on the models, if the drawing is free (for example vegetal) or more constrained (birds in particular); but overall it is quite long!
I first make a pencil drawing, then come the painting and the fillet (often gold) - and I almost always have to do several firings for the same piece. In fact, it's not the time it takes to make a piece that matters to me: it's my passion, and I love a job well done. And I am so happy to see that my creations are so popular!
How does your process work? As an artist, what does an average day look like for you?
I work every day, even on weekends, and often late at night! Sometimes I just choose a support, for example a glass plate, and I try to follow my desire of the moment. I paint a lot of elements of nature, and I realize that my creativity follows the rhythm of the seasons. But I also get more and more commissions, clients who ask me to invent a pattern including initials, or a certain kind of flowers. When it seems a bit complicated, I feel like I'm being challenged, I like it, I find it stimulating.
