A modern Marais bistro operated by an extraordinary team with an extra chromosome.

Step off the busy Rue de Temple street in the heart of ever-trendy and popular third arrondissement of Paris, you'll find Le Reflet.

Stone walls, white paint, and custom wood tables create an open, airy, and somewhat typical modern restaurant space. But who operates this unique eatery is anything but typical - the staff at Le Reflet have the condition Down's syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21.

The restoration project was designed by Flore Lelièvre, an interior designer whose brother has Down's syndrome. In one of the dining spaces, names of all who have worked or participated in the project hang from the ceiling. Like little paper angels, they float above your head as you contemplate meal choices.

What makes this place special

Despite the 2015 law encouraging “equal opportunities”, barely more than 1% of the 60,000 people with Down syndrome in France currently work in an “ordinary” environment. The design of this restaurant creates a space that is inclusive and allows those with disabilities the ability to work in a supportive environment.

After reaching your table, the staff explain the system. A series of cards on the table allow you to explore and order your dishes.

The amuse-bouche appetizer is included in all formulas. Using a dry-erase pen, you simply put a dot next to the dishes and drinks you and your companions want to order.

Food is made in house and seasonal while the surprisingly large wine list is provided by independent winegrowers working in organic, natural and biodynamic agriculture. Le Reflet is open for both lunch and dinner service but I suggest using their online booking system to make a reservation in advance.

The dishes are made in advance so there is little stress on the staff. They arrive to your table quickly and the team is very attentive to your needs.

My table gave me a view into the back-kitchen and even the staff washing dishes had Down syndrome. It was a heart-warming and convivial space and experience and I loved every moment of this social project.
